Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biotechnological Production of Betalains and Hygroaurins
Field of knowledge: Chemistry / Biochemistry / Biotechnology
FAPESP process: 2024/15255-9
Project title: Development of Photoactive Pigments Derived from L-Tyrosine for Advanced Applications
Working area: Biotechnological production and synthesis of natural pigments and derivatives; betalains and hygroaurins
Positions: 1
Duration: 12 months, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 48 months, subject to FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship regulations and satisfactory performance.
Probationary period: The fellowship will include an initial three-month probationary period, during which continuation will be evaluated based on performance, adherence to the proposed research plan, and compliance with FAPESP regulations.
This call refers to a Postdoctoral Fellowship associated with the FAPESP Thematic Project "Development of Photoactive Pigments Derived from L-Tyrosine for Advanced Applications", currently in progress at the Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil).
Note: This postdoctoral fellowship is already attached to the thematic project, meaning simplified evaluation by FAPESP. Selected candidates will be directly incorporated into the project upon FAPESP approval.
The project focuses on the production of betalains and hygroaurins, natural pigments derived from L-DOPA metabolism, using biotechnological and chemoenzymatic approaches combined with semisynthesis. The research explores synthetic strategies and investigates the relationship between molecular structure and functional properties.
In addition to developing sustainable and biocompatible synthetic routes to designed compounds, the work involves comprehensive structural, physicochemical, and photophysical characterization, with particular emphasis on applications as fluorophores, advanced antioxidants, and sun-protective agents.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a PhD degree obtained within the last 7 (seven) years prior to the start of the fellowship, from a recognized higher education or research institution in Brazil or abroad, with relevant academic production in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
For detailed information on eligibility requirements, rights, duties, and commitments of postdoctoral fellows, candidates are strongly encouraged to consult the FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship guidelines, available at:
The fellowship is initially awarded for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for additional periods, up to a maximum total duration of 48 months, in accordance with FAPESP regulations.
Requirements
In addition to the general eligibility criteria, applicants are expected to demonstrate:
PhD degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related areas;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
Broad scientific curiosity combined with a focused and independent research profile;
Solid background in at least three of the following areas: enzymology, biocatalysis, natural products, analytical chemistry, and photochemistry;
Proficiency in written and spoken English;
Full-time and exclusive dedication to the research project;
Ability to present scientific results clearly, both orally and in writing;
Availability to work on-site at the Institute of Chemistry (USP), São Paulo, and interest in international research internships.
Experience with cell culture, molecular biology, luminescent natural products, organic synthesis, or photoprotection studies will be considered an advantage but is not mandatory.
Applications
Applications will be accepted from January 19, 2026 to February 1, 2026.
Interested candidates should apply by sending an email to elbastos@usp.br, with the subject line:
"Postdoctoral Fellowship – Natural Pigments"
The following documents must be submitted in English, as a single PDF file:
Motivation letter (1–2 pages), describing research interests, alignment with the fellowship theme, and relevant prior experience;
Up to two representative publications (published, accepted, or submitted);
One letter of recommendation.
Selection process
The selection process will consist of two stages:
Elimination stage: evaluation of submitted documentation, considering adherence to this call and to FAPESP eligibility criteria. Only pre-selected candidates will be contacted. All applicants will receive feedback by February 2, 2026.
Classification stage: online interviews with pre-selected candidates (via Zoom, Teams, or equivalent platforms). The final result will be announced on February 5, 2026.
Doctoral Fellowship in the Chemistry of Natural Pigments and Derivatives
Field of knowledge: Chemistry
FAPESP process: 2024/15255-9
Project title: Development of Photoactive Pigments Derived from L-Tyrosine for Advanced Applications
Working area: Synthesis of natural pigments and derivatives
Positions: 2
Duration: 48 months (for candidates holding a Master's degree) or 60 months (for candidates without a Master's degree).
Application period: Open year-round. Candidates must have achieved a score equal to or above the average on the EUQ (https://euq.sbq.org.br/). For FAPESP fellowship eligibility, EUQ results from the last 3 years are valid. For institutional scholarships (CAPES/CNPq), please check the schedule at IQ-USP Graduate Program.
This call refers to doctoral positions that can be linked to the FAPESP Thematic Project "Development of Photoactive Pigments Derived from L-Tyrosine for Advanced Applications", currently in progress at the Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil).
Important: Doctoral fellowships require a separate individual application to FAPESP, which can be submitted as a project connected to the thematic project. The evaluation process typically takes approximately 75 days after submission. More details at https://fapesp.br/
